American literature encompasses a vast domain that intersects with global literary traditions, cultures, and nations, spanning from colonial times to its present influential stature. Our research expertise covers diverse areas, including the American Renaissance, modern and contemporary poetry, cultural studies, fiction, and (via the CHASE Consortium for the Humanities and Arts South-East England) American art. We invite applications across these disciplines and strongly encourage interdisciplinary perspectives. Additionally, you'll benefit from pioneering research in American history conducted at the Sussex Centre for American Studies. Our faculty offers specialized knowledge in slavery studies, the Civil War, the Cold War, U.S. foreign policy, and the enduring legacy of civil rights movements—all of which deeply influence American literary traditions. You may pursue either a PhD or an MPhil degree. These programs vary in duration and research scope: a PhD requires significant original contributions to your field, while an MPhil involves independent research at a more focused level, culminating in a Master of Philosophy degree. Transitioning from an MPhil to a PhD during your studies may also be possible.
