Our institution conducts groundbreaking, internationally recognized research spanning literature, writing, and linguistics. As part of the interdisciplinary School of Literature and Languages, we boast research-active faculty leading their fields in English literature, creative writing, film studies, translation studies, theoretical and applied linguistics, and cultural studies. This rich diversity of specializations creates a dynamic, creative community with abundant opportunities for intellectual collaboration.
We participate in TECHNE, an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC)-supported doctoral training initiative that offers extensive academic and professional development programs, including potential funding opportunities. Our English Literature PhD program develops critical thinking, research methodology, and analytical capabilities to prepare you for academic or professional advancement, typically completed within three to four years of full-time study.
Each student receives dedicated support from primary and secondary supervisors who provide regular feedback on your progress and written work. We emphasize writing as a fundamental tool for comprehension and innovation, requiring submissions from the program's outset.
During your first year, you'll refine your research focus and develop your project framework with supervisory guidance. As you progress through subsequent years, you'll gain increasing independence while receiving mentorship on conference presentations and academic publishing strategies.
