For those fascinated by the cosmos and mathematics, our combined mathematics and physics programs might be ideal for you. These interdisciplinary degrees, offered collaboratively by both departments, provide comprehensive BSc, MMath, and MPhys options that delve into mathematical theory and its practical applications in physics. Whether you view it as mathematical physics or theoretical mathematics, this dual program offers exceptional advantages. Two standout features include: Our renowned Professional Training opportunities: BSc students can undertake paid positions in research labs or corporations, acquiring hands-on professional experience. MPhys and MMath students have the opportunity for fourth-year research placements within our globally recognized research teams. Our emphasis on undergraduate research initiatives: Students may secure paid summer research positions with our departments or through our South East Physics Network collaborators. Internal funding is available to support research projects, conference attendance, or entrepreneurial ventures.
The curriculum covers fundamental subjects in both disciplines, such as quantum mechanics, linear algebra, particle physics, and differential equations. You can also select from diverse elective modules—including nuclear astrophysics, fluid mechanics, general relativity, and Galois theory—and complete an in-depth project to personalize your academic journey. Your capstone research project will be guided by a faculty member who is an expert in their field, with potential outcomes publishable in academic journals. Traditional lectures are enhanced by hands-on work in our state-of-the-art radiation laboratories, recently upgraded with a £2.7 million investment. Undergraduate students utilize these facilities for experiments connected to the Nuclear and Particle Physics coursework.
