Our BSc and MPhys Physics with Quantum Technologies programs introduce you to the quantum realm, unlocking diverse career possibilities across industry and research sectors. Quantum technologies leverage the unique properties of quantum mechanics to achieve what traditional methods cannot. These comprehensive programs explore every facet of this dynamic field - from laser systems and photonic applications to quantum information theory and computational methods. Both courses feature two distinctive elements: Our renowned Professional Training opportunities: The BSc program offers optional paid industry placements, providing practical experience to boost your career prospects. The MPhys includes an extended, graduate-level research placement, either within our top-tier research teams or at collaborating institutions worldwide. Our emphasis on undergraduate research initiatives: All students can pursue paid 8-10 week summer research positions within our departments or through the South East Physics Network. We provide internal funding opportunities for research projects, conference participation, or entrepreneurial ventures.
This curriculum blends conventional physics with cutting-edge quantum technology studies, equipping students with essential skills for this growing sector. You'll examine current quantum applications, including fiber-optic communication systems and Blu-ray laser technologies. The first year offers flexibility to transfer between our specialized physics programs. Students can enroll in either the BSc or the accelerated MPhys track, which leads directly to a master's qualification. MPhys candidates complete a dedicated research year before returning for advanced graduate-level coursework.
