Our BSc and MPhys programs provide a versatile selection of modules spanning diverse subjects, encompassing both theoretical and practical physics domains. The curriculum draws upon the extensive knowledge of our distinguished faculty members. Both degrees feature two distinctive elements: Our recognized Professional Training opportunities: The BSc includes an optional paid Professional Training placement in industry, offering essential practical experience to boost career prospects. The MPhys incorporates a year-long, masters-level integrated research placement, which can be undertaken within our renowned research teams or at collaborating institutions worldwide. Our emphasis on undergraduate research and innovation: All students can apply for paid 8-10 week summer research positions in our laboratories or with our South East Physics Network partners. We provide internal grants for research, innovation, and enterprise initiatives, enabling students to fund placements, attend conferences, or pursue entrepreneurial ventures.
Both the BSc and MPhys cover fundamental subjects like particle, nuclear, and atomic physics, alongside elective modules. Students can transfer between most specialized physics programs during their first year. The integrated research year or Professional Training option delivers crucial practical experience to strengthen job readiness. Classroom instruction is supplemented by work in our state-of-the-art radiation laboratories, which underwent a £2.7 million renovation and expansion. Undergraduate students utilize these facilities for experiments connected to the Nuclear and Particle Physics course. Applicants can choose between the BSc or MPhys route, with the MPhys offering a direct path to a masters qualification through its integrated research year, allowing for skill development in academic or industrial settings before completing final masters-level coursework.
