Our innovative BSc and MPhys Physics with Nuclear Astrophysics programs stand out as the only ones of their kind in the UK. While covering essential physics curriculum, you'll develop expertise in a specialized field that bridges the microscopic realm of atomic nuclei with the vastness of astronomical phenomena. The program offers access to cutting-edge facilities and benefits from our collaboration with the National Physical Laboratory. Two distinctive features of these courses include: Our renowned Professional Training opportunities: The BSc program includes an optional paid industry placement, providing practical experience to boost career prospects. MPhys students undertake an extended, masters-level research placement, either within our prestigious research teams or at international partner institutions. Our emphasis on undergraduate research initiatives: All students can pursue paid 8-10 week summer research positions in our laboratories or with South East Physics Network collaborators. Internal funding opportunities support research projects, conference attendance, or entrepreneurial ventures.
The curriculum covers fundamental physics concepts (including particle physics and molecular structures) alongside specialized astronomy and nuclear physics topics, mirroring Surrey's groundbreaking research. BSc students may opt for a Professional Training placement, while MPhys candidates complete an integrated research year leading directly to a masters degree. This research year enhances academic or industrial skills before returning for final masters-level coursework. Traditional lectures are supplemented by hands-on sessions in our state-of-the-art radiation laboratories, recently upgraded through a £2.7 million investment. Undergraduate students utilize these facilities for experiments connected to the Nuclear and Particle Physics curriculum.
