Our BSc and MPhys Physics with Astronomy programs explore humanity's position in the universe. You'll study groundbreaking theories about cosmic origins and the beginnings of life, with opportunities to conduct original research alongside prominent scientists in the discipline. Our campus boasts exceptional astronomical resources, featuring instructional and public engagement telescopes for practical observation training, plus advanced computing systems and GPU clusters. Two distinctive features of these programs include: Our renowned Professional Training opportunities: The BSc offers optional paid industry placements that provide valuable practical experience to boost career prospects. The MPhys includes a year-long, graduate-level integrated research placement, either with our globally-recognized research teams or at our international partner institutions. Our emphasis on undergraduate research initiatives: All students can apply for paid 8-10 week summer research positions within our research groups or with our South East Physics Network collaborators. Internal funding is available to support research projects, conference attendance, or entrepreneurial ventures.
These Physics with Astronomy programs cover fundamental physics principles - from classical mechanics and electromagnetism to quantum theory - before specializing in astronomical studies. You'll examine stellar and planetary formation, galactic evolution, and cosmology, while exploring topics like extraterrestrial life detection, gravitational waves, and dark matter/energy mysteries. Research projects with our leading academic teams are available. Traditional lectures are enhanced by hands-on work in our upgraded radiation laboratories, which underwent a £2.7 million renovation and expansion. Undergraduate students utilize these facilities for experiments connected to the Nuclear and Particle Physics curriculum.
