Our BSc and MPhys Physics with Astronomy programs explore humanity's position in the universe. You'll study groundbreaking theories about cosmic origins and the beginnings of life, with opportunities to conduct original research alongside field-leading scientists. Our campus boasts exceptional astronomical resources, featuring instructional telescopes for hands-on observational practice, along with advanced computing and GPU clusters. Two distinctive features of these programs include: Our renowned Professional Training opportunities: The BSc offers optional paid industry placements that provide valuable practical experience to boost career prospects. MPhys students undertake a year-long, graduate-level integrated research placement, either with our world-class research teams or at collaborating international institutions. Our emphasis on undergraduate research initiatives: All students can apply for paid 8-10 week summer research positions within our departments or through our South East Physics Network affiliates. Internal funding is available to support research projects, conference attendance, or entrepreneurial ventures.
These Physics with Astronomy programs cover fundamental physics principles - from classical mechanics to quantum theory - before specializing in astronomical studies. You'll examine stellar evolution, planetary systems, galactic structures, and cosmology, while exploring topics like extraterrestrial life searches, gravitational waves, and dark matter mysteries. Research projects with our top-tier academic teams are available. Traditional lectures are enhanced by practical sessions in our state-of-the-art radiation laboratories, recently upgraded through a £2.7 million investment. Undergraduate students utilize these facilities for experiments connected to the Nuclear and Particle Physics curriculum.
