Our BSc and MPhys Physics with Astronomy programs explore humanity's position in the universe. You'll study groundbreaking theories about cosmic origins and the beginnings of life, with opportunities to conduct original research alongside field-leading scientists. Our campus boasts exceptional astronomical resources, including instructional telescopes for hands-on observational practice and advanced computing systems. Two distinctive features of these programs include: Our renowned Professional Training opportunities: The BSc offers optional paid industry placements that provide valuable practical experience to boost career prospects. MPhys students undertake year-long, graduate-level research placements, either within our top-tier research teams or at collaborating institutions worldwide. Our emphasis on undergraduate research initiatives: All students can apply for competitive 8-10 week paid summer research positions in our laboratories or through our South East Physics Network. We provide internal funding opportunities for research projects, conference attendance, or entrepreneurial ventures.
These astronomy-focused physics programs cover fundamental principles from classical mechanics to quantum theory before specializing in cosmic studies. You'll examine stellar evolution, galactic formation, and universal expansion while investigating extraterrestrial life possibilities, gravitational phenomena, and dark matter mysteries. Research projects with our distinguished academic teams are available. Traditional lectures are enhanced by practical sessions in our state-of-the-art radiation laboratories, recently upgraded through a £2.7 million investment. Undergraduate students utilize these facilities for experiments connected to the Nuclear and Particle Physics curriculum.
