For those fascinated by the cosmos and mathematical principles, our mathematics and physics programs might be ideal for you. These interdisciplinary courses, offered collaboratively by both departments through our BSc, MMath, and MPhys degrees, provide profound mathematical insights and demonstrate their application in solving physics challenges. Whether viewed as applied mathematics or theoretical physics, this combined curriculum offers the advantages of both disciplines. Two distinctive features of these programs include: Our renowned Professional Training opportunities: BSc students can undertake paid positions in research labs or corporations, acquiring practical industry experience. MPhys and MMath candidates can pursue Year 4 research placements within our globally recognized research teams. Our emphasis on undergraduate research initiatives: Students may secure paid summer research positions with our academic teams or through our South East Physics Network collaborators. Internal funding is available to support research projects, conference attendance, or entrepreneurial ventures.
These programs cover fundamental subjects in both fields, such as linear algebra, quantum mechanics, differential equations, and particle physics. Students can select from diverse elective modules—including fluid dynamics, nuclear astrophysics, Galois theory, and general relativity—and complete an extended project to personalize their academic journey. The capstone research project is guided by faculty members who are experts in their respective fields, with potential outcomes publishable in academic journals. Traditional lectures are enhanced by hands-on work in our state-of-the-art radiation laboratories, recently upgraded through a £2.7 million investment. Undergraduate researchers utilize these facilities for experiments connected to the Nuclear and Particle Physics curriculum.
