This program allows you to explore biological structures and functions across multiple scales, ranging from molecular interactions to entire ecosystems. Your initial year covers essential bioscience fundamentals, establishing a strong base for advanced study. In the second year, you can focus on specific areas like animal biology and ecology, cellular and molecular sciences, or infection and immunity, or opt for interdisciplinary modules such as analytical biochemistry, cellular microbiology, or neuroscience. The third year deepens your expertise in your selected specialization or broader field through advanced topics like pharmacology, genetics, and human-environment interactions, culminating in a research project that integrates your acquired practical, analytical, and presentation skills.
Fieldwork opportunities extend beyond campus, enabling you to apply scientific techniques in real-world settings at locations including Birdworld, the Natural History Museum, Merristwood College, the Millennium Seedbank, and the Surrey Wildlife Trust. Our state-of-the-art £12.5 million Innovation for Health Learning Laboratory provides immersive, hands-on training, with instructional videos demonstrating experimental procedures and scientific protocols.
Equipped with cutting-edge technology, the laboratory supports diverse experiments - from investigating biotechnological microorganisms and disease-causing pathogens to examining cellular composition and molecular genetics. You'll conduct your first practical experiment within the first fortnight of the program.
