Our BA (Hons) Applied and Contemporary Theatre program prepares tomorrow's theatre creators, equipping them to use performance as a tool for community building and social transformation. This discipline employs drama to explore, understand, and highlight community concerns and societal disparities. The curriculum engages with modern political discourse, challenging students to consider not just theatrical techniques but also the purpose behind their art and the messages they wish to convey through performance.
Throughout this degree, you'll learn from top industry professionals while joining a dynamic collective of performers, theatre creators, artistic practitioners, and technical specialists. The program guides students through developing skills in devising, producing, and directing theatre, while preparing them for diverse creative environments including correctional facilities, community centers, and healthcare settings. Alongside mastering performance fundamentals (vocal technique, singing, movement, theatre creation, and music), second-year students gain hands-on experience through placements with leading theatre companies. An optional Professional Training year is available between the second and final years. Past placement partners have included notable organizations such as Chickenshed, Peer Productions, Burnt Orange Theatre, Guildford Shakespeare Company, Boundless Theatre, New Victoria Theatre, and Yvonne Arnaud Theatre.
