Our department boasts dedicated faculty in French, Italian, Spanish, and Translation studies, providing exceptional guidance for your research endeavors. As part of our Graduate School community, you'll collaborate with fellow students spanning diverse academic fields. Our cross-disciplinary approach to modern languages (including French, Spanish, Italian, and Mandarin) explores themes of representation, interpretation, and cultural transmission across various media - from cinema and literature to journalism, opera, theater, philosophy, and translation studies. Key research focuses encompass literary and intellectual history, displacement studies, psychological resilience, female authorship, performance studies, and the translation of cultural identities. These initiatives frequently involve partnerships with external organizations.
Students normally require to have a first-class or upper second-class UK Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, in Spanish, French or Italian. 
IELTS (Academic): 6.5 overall (no individual band less than 5.5)
TOEFL (ibt): 80 overall, with the following minimum scores in each component: Listening: 17 Reading: 18 Speaking: 20 Writing: 18.
