Person-centered experiential counseling and psychotherapy is globally acknowledged. Research indicates it stands among the foremost therapeutic methods for mental health and wellness, while continually advancing both practical implementations and theoretical understanding. Our well-established postgraduate counseling programs provide exceptional opportunities to master person-centered experiential techniques at a Master's level. These courses enjoy worldwide recognition, drawing students from the UK, Europe, North America, and Asia.
The redesigned MSc Counseling & Psychotherapy program addresses contemporary demands for evidence-based practice, higher educational benchmarks, growing professional oversight, and societal transformations. You'll acquire comprehensive theoretical knowledge, research skills, and practical expertise, along with the ability to navigate broader mental health contexts across various sectors.
Program Focus
The Master's program maintains a strong focus on person-centered therapy throughout. Your training will encompass theoretical foundations, personal growth, professional development, and hands-on skill-building. A key component involves preparing you for client work across multiple platforms - in-person, digital, and telephone sessions - with remote client work being an essential part of your placement experience.
The practical counseling curriculum includes:
The Therapeutic Relationship
The Therapeutic Process
Personality Theory
Case Analysis
Clinical Practicum
Professional Development
The research component provides methodological training and requires completion of either an empirical study, practical case analysis, or literature review.
Research Projects
The dissertation offers training in key counseling research methodologies with four project options: quantitative research, qualitative investigation, systematic case study, or comprehensive literature review.
Career Pathways
Graduates qualify for various employment opportunities, often continuing with their placement organizations to accumulate additional client hours. Many secure positions in telephone counseling services or corporate assistance programs shortly after completing the program.
We strongly advise graduates to pursue professional accreditation, which requires 450 practice hours beyond the program's 150-hour minimum. Most counselors combine part-time agency work (NHS or voluntary sector) with private practice while pursuing additional qualifications in group therapy or supervision. Some maintain dual careers combining counseling with other professions.
BACP Accreditation Note
Postgraduate Diploma graduates do not receive accreditation status. Full BACP accreditation requires completion of the entire Master's program.
