This course is perfect if you're aiming for a career in charity work, education, government, civil service, or heritage sectors. It also suits professionals already employed in organizations with a focus on gender issues in society. For research-oriented students, the MSc Applied Gender Studies offers a Research Methods pathway, helping graduates qualify for ESRC funding—a crucial step for those considering PhD studies in Social Sciences. Through this program, you'll enhance your analytical and practical skills to critically examine modern gender topics such as: gender theory
gender equality
feminist theory
queer theory
LGBT studies
gender & society
A major emphasis is applying these concepts in real-world settings. You'll gain hands-on experience by collaborating on research projects with external partners from feminist organizations and groups promoting gender equality in arts, culture, and sports. **What You’ll Study** Gender studies is an interdisciplinary field exploring social and cultural dimensions. The MSc Applied Gender Studies blends core courses on gender theory, feminist research, and feminist history with elective classes across various disciplines. Strathclyde excels in feminist and queer perspectives within Journalism, Media Studies, English Literature, History, Creative Writing, Education, Politics, International Relations, Criminology, and Social Policy. The program includes three core modules and three electives, updated yearly. Core courses offer an interdisciplinary foundation for gender analysis, rooted in feminist theory and addressing intersecting inequalities. A key focus is tracing the evolution of feminist theory, research, and activism. Visits to Glasgow Women’s Library provide insights into feminist archiving and working with original collections. You'll gain expertise in feminist debates on ontology, epistemology, and methodology, helping you recognize similarities and differences in how these ideas have been applied across disciplines. The Gender Studies Research Placement and Advanced Topics in Gender Studies are annual options, alongside a Gender Studies dissertation. We support diverse research interests and methodologies. **Career Opportunities** The MSc Applied Gender Studies prepares you for roles in feminist organizations or equality and diversity work in various fields. Part-time study is encouraged, and current professionals may integrate workplace research into their placement or dissertation. We also support students pursuing PhDs in Humanities or Social Sciences via the Research Methods pathway.
