The Journalism, Media & Communication (JMC) program is offered through the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, guided by a distinguished team of global scholars. Doctoral candidates in JMC conduct original research culminating in a thesis that expands existing literature and/or professional practice, offering novel insights to the discipline. Students actively participate in the dynamic research community through seminars, MediaComm Jam events, and the Graduate School network. A Strathclyde JMC PhD may explore multiple domains, including: applying media and communication theories to push boundaries in related fields; critically examining journalism, media industries, their operations and regulations; investigating historical, cultural and societal inequalities as they intersect with media; enhancing knowledge of media consumption's impact on audiences, communities and industries; and evaluating interdisciplinary methodologies. Strathclyde provides expert supervision across JMC specializations such as: journalism studies and practice; digital media platforms; political communication strategies; health and science messaging; and gender representation in media.
For PhD, normally, a first-class or upper second-class Honours degree, or overseas equivalent, plus a Masters degree in a relevant area.
If you're an international applicant and don’t have a degree from a UK University (or a University where the primary medium of instruction is English), you'll also be required to provide an IELTS certificate (overall minimum band score of 7 with no individual test score below 6.5, the test must be taken within two years of the programme start date).
