Our Secondary Art and Design PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) prepares you to become a skilled educator for Key Stages 3 and 4. Through placements in nearby schools, you'll develop lesson planning skills, classroom management strategies, and insights into student learning. University sessions will deepen your subject expertise through personalized guidance and reflective practice. Beyond teacher certification, you'll join our Institute of Education community, gaining access to cutting-edge classroom research and proven teaching methods.
The PGCE program emphasizes practical experience during school placements. Alongside teaching responsibilities, you'll facilitate student participation in our poetry and visual arts initiative, culminating in a published anthology showcasing their creative works. Your dedicated tutor will provide continuous support, from initial orientation to your first classroom experiences, complemented by strong mentorship from our partner schools.
This full-year program (September-July) combines school-based training with weekly university sessions covering curriculum knowledge and teaching methodologies. The course includes 20 Intensive Training and Practice days to strengthen core teaching competencies.
You'll complete over 120 placement days across two secondary schools, with additional primary school exposure, gradually building your teaching confidence without immediate full-class responsibilities.
