This program merges psychology and counseling, giving you exposure to two distinct fields. With additional training, you can qualify as a professional counselor or psychotherapist. The interpersonal and active listening skills you'll gain are also valuable for numerous other careers, such as educational support roles, wellbeing coaching, or positions within the care sector.
Our hands-on, supportive teaching method covers theoretical foundations before applying them through practical scenarios. You'll explore various psychological approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy, person-centered techniques, and psychodynamic methods. Ethical considerations in counseling will be thoroughly examined, alongside an emphasis on personal growth. Many students report profound self-discovery during this process. The curriculum includes skills workshops where you'll alternate between counselor and client roles.
Psychology students enjoy access to specialized labs featuring eye-tracking technology, physiological monitoring tools (like heart rate sensors), virtual reality systems, driving simulators, pain stimulus equipment, experimental software, and dedicated counseling spaces. These resources enable scientific validation of psychological theories.
Career Paths
This degree offers diverse opportunities. Graduates can pursue postgraduate counseling programs accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
Professional counselors may establish private practices or join the NHS. Other options include school counseling, correctional facility work, rehabilitation programs, HR departments, or mental health roles in charitable organizations and private companies.
Even if you choose not to pursue professional counseling certification, you'll acquire essential academic skills like self-awareness, effective communication, and relationship-building - all crucial for career advancement.
Our alumni have entered teaching, social work, HR, and wellbeing mentoring positions, demonstrating the program's versatility.
