The School of Geography and Sustainable Development is home to an energetic and varied group of approximately 50 research students, primarily pursuing three-year PhD programs. The PhD (Doctorate) typically spans three years, culminating in a thesis limited to 80,000 words and an oral defense. Set within the picturesque University of St Andrews, students benefit from an inspiring interdisciplinary environment. With dedicated supervision, top-tier library resources, and advanced laboratory facilities, the university fosters groundbreaking research across numerous disciplines. The School focuses on key research domains including environmental transformation, sustainability geographies, social structures, inequality studies, and population health.
The GOSSIP research group originated from interdisciplinary discussions among critical human geographers and sustainability experts (spanning arts, social sciences, and natural sciences), which began in 2016.
This collective engages with theoretical frameworks, social philosophy, and empirical studies rooted in sustainability challenges and societal dynamics, particularly examining associated inequalities. They investigate innovative solutions while reflecting on historical perspectives across different contexts. Employing diverse methodologies including qualitative analysis and archival work, the group emphasizes collaborative knowledge creation with non-academic partners.
