The 1-year MSc (by research) program, available in Psychology or Neuroscience, focuses entirely on an independent research project completed within 12 months (or part-time equivalent). Students work under the guidance of one or more faculty members from the School, culminating in a thesis not exceeding 30,000 words. Both the PhD and MSc (by research) programs offer personalized training, which may include tutorials with supervisors and staff, specialized courses from the School of Psychology and Neuroscience or related departments, workshops from University units like the Centre for Academic, Professional and Organisational Development, or external training providers. Students are also encouraged to attend conferences, seminars, and workshops, both within and outside the University.
The Origins of Mind research group investigates how evolutionary background and developmental processes shape behavior and cognition across diverse species, including non-human primates, elephants, birds, children, and adult humans. Their work utilizes facilities such as the Living Links to Human Evolution Centre at Edinburgh Zoo, African field sites like Budongo Conservation Field Station, child testing labs, and human experimental laboratories.
