The MPhil program typically spans two years. The initial year covers the coursework elements of an MLitt, followed by a second year dedicated to writing a thesis with a maximum length of 40,000 words. Candidates possessing an appropriate Masters or MLitt qualification may qualify for direct entry into the MPhil's second year. The Modern and Contemporary research cluster examines literary and cultural works from the late 19th century through the early 21st century. Their diverse scholarship encompasses everything from fin de siècle movements to modern poetry, with specialized knowledge in Modernism (including T.S. Eliot and Virginia Woolf), gender studies and women's literature, detective fiction, current critical approaches, modern poetry, British and American drama, Scottish literary traditions, speculative fiction, wartime literature, 1940s-era writing, British film, and musical culture.
