As an MA (Hons) French student, you'll refine your language and communication abilities to an advanced level. The program offers exploration of specialized subjects such as French linguistics, literature, cultural studies, history, political science, and cinema. In your third year, you can participate in study abroad opportunities at one of the University's Erasmus partner institutions in France. Those who complete a year overseas gain not only practical teaching experience but also enhance their language proficiency, cross-cultural understanding, and personal growth. The MA (Hons) in French also offers a five-year variant incorporating a dedicated year abroad. This integrated international year allows students to work in a Francophone environment between their second and third years. The curriculum combines advanced, research-focused study of Modern Languages (French and Italian) and Ancient History, fostering comprehension of knowledge creation and development. The program cultivates independent scholarship characterized by curiosity, precision, academic integrity, and rigorous thinking. This 60-month course culminates in a Master of Arts (Honours) degree. Like all St Andrews programs, it follows a modular credit system requiring 540 credits total, typically 120 credits per academic year. The initial two years feature compulsory program-specific modules alongside elective options (sometimes including cross-faculty courses), while subsequent years focus on specialized, research-driven advanced studies.
