As an MA (Hons) French student, you'll refine advanced language and communication abilities by exploring French and Francophone linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. The program offers research-focused specializations spanning medieval to contemporary works, political and cultural studies, performance analysis, intellectual history, postcolonial theories, gender studies, film adaptations, modern philosophy, creative writing, and translation studies. This four or five-year degree, administered by the School of Modern Languages, begins with foundational training in French language and cultural studies during the first two years, enhancing analytical reading, oral fluency, writing proficiency, and translation techniques. First-year students select two supplementary subjects alongside French, typically continuing with at least one into the second year. The third year presents optional international study opportunities at French partner universities, where coursework substitutes for St Andrews equivalents. Alternatively, students may opt for an integrated year abroad before completing two Honours years.
