The MA (Hons) in Film Studies provides an in-depth exploration of international film cultures. You'll investigate the cultural, industrial, and institutional aspects of global cinema while developing analytical, historical, political, and phenomenological approaches to film scholarship. This program equips students with valuable academic skills as they critically analyze film history across artistic, documentary, and non-theatrical formats - from early precursors to digital media. The curriculum covers diverse subjects including stardom, media activism, archival studies, and film festivals. This four-year program, offered by the Department of Film Studies, begins with foundational courses introducing essential concepts, theories, and methodologies during the first two years. These prepare students for advanced, specialized Honours-level modules. The program combines Film Studies with German language study at a research-intensive level, fostering an understanding of knowledge creation and development. Students develop independent learning skills characterized by curiosity, integrity, precision, and academic rigor. This 48-month Master of Arts (Honours) degree follows St Andrews' credit-based system, requiring 480 credits (typically 120 per year). The initial years combine program-specific core modules with optional courses (sometimes from other faculties), while later years focus on advanced, research-driven specialization.
