The MA (Hons) in Art History equips students with the skills to critically evaluate diverse artworks while developing strong visual and verbal communication abilities. This program primarily examines painting, sculpture, and architecture while also covering applied arts, graphic design, performance art, and photography. Throughout the degree, students learn to assess artistic works through multiple lenses - analyzing style, content, meaning, theoretical foundations, and aesthetic qualities. The curriculum introduces various critical methodologies to uncover both overt and subtle concepts within artistic creations. This four-year program, offered by the School of Art History, integrates elements from economic, social, and political history along with literature, philosophy, and psychology to provide comprehensive frameworks for art analysis. The first year curriculum focuses on two key areas: European and global medieval/Renaissance art, emphasizing the socio-political and religious contexts of artistic production, and 17th-18th century European art and architecture, which explores technological innovations, expanding viewership, and colonial influences.
