The MA (Hons) in Art History equips students with the skills to critically evaluate diverse artworks while developing strong visual and verbal communication abilities. This program primarily examines painting, sculpture, and architecture while also covering applied arts, graphic design, performance art, and photography. Throughout the degree, students learn to assess artistic works through multiple lenses - analyzing stylistic elements, thematic content, symbolic meanings, theoretical foundations, and aesthetic qualities. The curriculum introduces various analytical frameworks to uncover both overt and subtle concepts embedded in artistic creations.
This four-year honors program, offered by the School of Art History, provides a comprehensive education that intersects with economic history, social studies, political science, literature, philosophy, and psychology - offering rich contextual understanding and critical methodologies for art analysis.
First-year studies focus on two key areas. The first explores medieval and Renaissance art across Europe and other regions, emphasizing the social, political, and religious contexts of artistic production while considering global connections. The second course investigates 17th and 18th century art and architecture, predominantly European but not exclusively, examining technological innovations, expanding viewership, and colonial influences.
