The MA (Hons) in Ancient History delves into the civilizations of Greece and Rome, along with neighboring cultures like the Persians and Carthaginians. This program examines the era spanning from the emergence of Greek writing and urbanization in the 8th century BCE to the fall of the western Roman empire in the 5th century CE. Geographically, the focus centers on the Mediterranean region, occasionally extending from the Persian Gulf to Scotland and from Crimea to the Sahara Desert. The curriculum covers not just political and military developments, but also explores themes including gender studies, ancient slavery, colonial expansion, religious practices, cross-cultural interactions, and the environmental and economic systems of the classical world. Students will additionally analyze ancient source materials and investigate how Greek and Roman societies interpreted and reshaped their historical narratives to suit evolving circumstances.
