The MA (Hons) in Ancient History delves into the civilizations of Greece and Rome, along with neighboring cultures like the Persians and Carthaginians. This program examines historical developments from the emergence of Greek writing and urbanization in the 8th century BCE to the fall of the western Roman empire in the 5th century CE. Geographically, the focus spans the Mediterranean region, occasionally reaching from the Persian Gulf to Scotland and from the Crimean peninsula to the Sahara desert. The curriculum covers not just political and military history, but also explores themes including gender studies, ancient slavery, colonial expansion, religious practices, cultural exchanges, and the environmental and economic aspects of Mediterranean societies. Learners will additionally investigate ancient source materials and analyze how Greek and Roman societies interpreted and reshaped their historical narratives over time.
