The MA (Hons) in Ancient History delves into the civilizations of Greece and Rome, along with neighboring cultures like the Persians and Carthaginians. This program examines the era spanning from the emergence of Greek writing and urban development in the 8th century BCE to the fall of the western Roman empire in the 5th century CE. Geographically, the focus centers on the Mediterranean region, occasionally extending from the Persian Gulf to Scotland and from Crimea to the Sahara Desert. The curriculum covers not just political and military history, but also explores themes including gender studies, slavery, colonization, religious practices, cultural exchanges, and the ecological and economic aspects of ancient Mediterranean societies. Learners will additionally investigate ancient sources and analyze how Greek and Roman societies interpreted and reshaped historical narratives to suit evolving circumstances.
