The MA (Hons) in Social Anthropology delves into humanity's core question: what defines us as human beings? This program addresses this inquiry by analyzing the varied approaches humans take to create and maintain social structures in modern society. While Social Anthropology encompasses all human societies, St Andrews primarily concentrates on regions including East and West Africa, the Pacific, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Central Asia. This four-year program, offered by the Department of Social Anthropology, features a unique approach blending interpretive, experiential, philosophical, and historical research with political engagement and critical awareness. Students may choose to study abroad for a year.
