The PhD degree is granted to candidates who undertake an in-depth research project, document their discoveries in a dissertation, and successfully defend it during an oral assessment. This research focuses on thoroughly investigating a specific subject or issue under the guidance of a faculty mentor, serving as an advanced research training program. Candidates are expected to develop comprehensive knowledge of political science topics relevant to their research focus and receive instruction in diverse research methodologies. Opportunities to teach in undergraduate courses may also be provided.
We welcome discussions with prospective students about their research ideas and provide advice on refining their scope and direction. Our supervision accommodates various methodological approaches—quantitative, qualitative, and critical theory—without favoring any particular method. We particularly encourage applications in our areas of specialization where we possess significant expertise. Our faculty members are engaged in all five C2G2 research themes, with many being internationally recognized leaders in their fields. This ensures PhD candidates receive guidance from top-tier scholars. Furthermore, our Division holds ESRC accreditation for its postgraduate research programs. We assist students in securing ESRC funding and have a strong track record in this regard. Competitive scholarships are also available within our Division.
Our PhD programs span numerous political science and international relations disciplines, with the Centre for Citizenship, Globalization and Governance (C2G2) driving research across our five thematic areas. Our supervision covers political theory, comparative politics, policy studies, global affairs, international political economy, and international relations, with faculty pursuing diverse topics within these fields.
