A Master's by Research program enables students to undertake an independent, supervised research project on a chosen approved topic. Upon completion, candidates submit a thesis of maximum 40,000 words. Like all research degrees, assessment involves two stages: thesis evaluation followed by an oral examination. This program offers flexible study options - full-time or part-time, on-campus or remote (where research permits). The duration is typically one year full-time or two years part-time, available across most disciplines. Unlike taught programs, the Master's by Research focuses solely on independent research without scheduled classes. Full-time students dedicate approximately 35 hours weekly to self-directed study, while part-time students commit around 12 hours. Each postgraduate researcher receives guidance from an expert supervisory team who provide project development support, progress feedback, and completion advice throughout the research journey.
