Metaphysics explores the fundamental nature of existence and reality. It addresses questions like: Do physical objects exist outside our awareness, or is reality composed solely of conscious minds and their experiences? Do abstract entities like numbers (such as 42) or mathematical principles (like the Pythagorean theorem) have independent existence? What is the nature of consciousness—are we physical beings or something beyond matter? Does a divine being exist?

Our faculty and students investigate metaphysical questions concerning human existence. Key inquiries include: What defines a human person? How do we maintain our identity over time—what makes a past or future individual specifically you? Eric Olson champions animalism, the theory that humans are essentially biological organisms. This perspective challenges traditional views that personal identity depends on psychological continuity.
