Delve into human genetics and gain insights into the clinical diagnosis of genetic disorders at both chromosomal and DNA levels.
Created in partnership with the NHS: Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service, this program caters to students passionate about medical genetics.
Through both theoretical knowledge and practical training, you'll examine human genetics and learn how genetic diseases are clinically identified at chromosomal and molecular levels. You'll also have chances to investigate genetics' broader impacts in areas like genomics, fertility, stem cells, and cancer biology.
As part of your studies, you'll master various cutting-edge laboratory methods, including CRISPR genome editing, molecular cloning, organism handling, DNA sequencing, PCR, SDS-PAGE, and western blotting.
The centerpiece of your program is the medical genetics lab project, where you'll dedicate up to six months to intensive training in advanced techniques like human cell culture, microscopy, cytogenetics, and qPCR, applying these skills to research and diagnose genetic conditions.
Your professional future
This course's specialized lab training and development of clinical skills valued by UK diagnostic facilities prepare Human and Molecular Genetics MSc graduates for careers in healthcare diagnostics, whether with providers like the NHS, allied health organizations, or top-tier research institutions.
