Delve into the forefront of contemporary astrophysics with this comprehensive program. You'll acquire hands-on expertise in professional astrophysics techniques and gain the ability to carry out independent astronomical observations.
This program details the creation and development of stars, galaxies, and the cosmos. You'll receive instruction on conducting observations with our 0.5m telescope situated on La Palma in the Canary Islands, which can be controlled remotely from Sheffield. Additionally, you may join a subsidized expedition to La Palma to tour premier global observatories.
Select from various elective modules that expand your cosmic knowledge, including particle physics, dark matter, general relativity, and astrobiology. Your degree culminates in a major research project, with potential topics spanning galaxies, quasars, supernovae, stellar evolution, planetary formation, and solar system development.
Field trip
Astrophysics students have the opportunity to visit La Palma's international observatory through a subsidized trip. This prime astronomical location hosts cutting-edge telescopes and offers ideal observation conditions at 2,400m elevation near the equator.
Career prospects
The advanced curriculum and rigorous research training provide excellent preparation for doctoral studies and careers in astrophysics research. Our alumni have secured positions with prestigious institutions including space agencies, observatories, and leading global universities.
Astrophysics graduates develop valuable quantitative, analytical, and data interpretation skills applicable across diverse fields such as software development, data analytics, and R&D. Sheffield physics graduates have been recruited by prominent organizations ranging from tech firms to healthcare providers and government agencies.
