Develop skills and gain hands-on experience to prepare for a career in physics research. Our students have completed placements at prestigious institutions, from government research facilities to CERN's Large Hadron Collider. Following your placement, you'll become part of a Sheffield-based research team and lead your own project.
This program offers you the opportunity to acquire valuable skills and practical knowledge that will benefit both your final degree years and future physics research career. Our students have undertaken placements involving cutting-edge particle accelerator development and nuclear waste solutions at government labs, as well as research at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, before completing their degree within one of Sheffield's research teams.

During your initial studies, you'll master fundamental physics concepts that form the basis for all advanced topics: thermodynamics, dynamics, electromagnetism, and quantum theory. Your learning will combine lectures with hands-on laboratory sessions, ensuring you connect theoretical concepts with practical applications. You'll conduct experiments using state-of-the-art lab equipment to see how key theories manifest in real-world scenarios.

In your second year, you'll delve deeper into core physics principles and select specialized modules covering topics like astrophysics, particle detection techniques, or acoustical physics. Our programming courses will equip you with versatile skills applicable to various graduate careers, ranging from data analytics to video game development.

Your third year will be dedicated to your professional placement. Upon returning to Sheffield for your fourth year, you'll have the chance to explore diverse specializations and undertake an independent physics research project. Core modules will focus on advanced topics including particle physics, nuclear science, and semiconductor technology, with elective options spanning cosmology, theoretical physics, and business applications.
