During this program, you'll develop valuable skills through a work placement that can enhance both your final degree years and future research career. Astrophysics students have secured placements at renowned institutions like the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes in the Canary Islands and the Thai National Observatory.
While studying in Sheffield, half your time will focus on astrophysics coursework, as our curriculum offers more specialized astrophysics content than typical programs. Our facility features two rooftop telescopes that you'll learn to operate starting in your first year. Additionally, we maintain a telescope on La Palma in the Canary Islands, which students utilize during our yearly field excursion.
Your initial coursework will introduce core physics concepts through lectures and laboratory sessions, covering thermodynamics, electromagnetism, quantum physics, and classical mechanics. You'll simultaneously explore astronomical principles through modules examining planetary systems, stellar evolution, galactic structures, and cosmological foundations. Hands-on telescope training and programming instruction will provide essential skills for contemporary astrophysics and various professional fields, including data analytics and software development.
