During this program, you'll dedicate one year of your studies at a German partner university, immersing yourself in mathematics taught entirely in German. While in Sheffield, two-thirds of your time will focus on mathematical studies, with the remaining portion dedicated to advancing your German language proficiency. You'll master the same core subjects as other mathematics students and undertake a significant research project in your final year.
Your first year features a carefully selected set of mathematics modules covering fundamental concepts essential for your degree. German language classes will enhance your skills through weekly conversations with native speakers, culminating in a German-language project and presentation.
Second-year studies continue to strengthen both your German fluency and mathematical expertise, equipping you with advanced techniques for complex problem-solving. Certain optional modules incorporate practical projects, allowing you to apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations similar to professional environments. Dedicated preparation time is also included for your upcoming third-year study abroad experience.
Upon returning to Sheffield for your final year, you'll have developed the mathematical versatility to explore diverse specializations. You can select from numerous optional mathematics modules while language classes aim to bring you near-native fluency.
One-third of your final year will involve an independent mathematics research project. You'll select a topic aligned with your interests and collaborate with a faculty expert, ultimately presenting and documenting your findings. Assessment methods vary by module and may include quizzes, exams, presentations, tutorial participation, projects, and written assignments.
Exceptional mathematical training creates numerous career pathways for graduates, ranging from finance and insurance to tech development and cybersecurity. Many find opportunities in data-driven industries that inform business strategies and product development.
Sheffield mathematics alumni have secured positions with prestigious organizations including AstraZeneca, BAE Systems, Barclays, Bet365, Dell, Deloitte, Goldman Sachs, GSK, HSBC, IBM, Lloyds, PwC, Unilever, the Civil Service, and the NHS. Many graduates also pursue doctoral studies at top-ranked global universities.
