This field centers on enhancing living standards with sustainability as its foundation, exploring structures, water systems, geotechnics, and environmental challenges. The Civil and Structural Engineering Department provides programs in Civil and Structural Engineering, Architectural Engineering, and Urban Engineering.
For those lacking traditional STEM qualifications for engineering studies, a foundation year serves as an ideal starting point.

Upon completing the foundation year—which covers mathematics, physics, and chemistry—students advance to their selected degree program within the Civil and Structural Engineering Department.

Our interdisciplinary and forward-thinking curriculum bridges engineering and architectural disciplines.

All undergraduate programs feature the Integrated Design Project, challenging students to envision comprehensive urban renewal plans for actual Sheffield locations, fostering large-scale creative thinking.

Students explore innovative design approaches and construction materials while crafting sophisticated designs like sustainable high-rises, graceful bridges, or cutting-edge sports facilities. This provides crucial hands-on experience with real-world professional challenges.

Our alumni pursue global careers, from the UK to Australia and the US, with recent graduates employed at AECOM, Arup, Atkins, Buro Happold, Eastwood & Partners, and Kier.

Students can implement their expertise across diverse sectors including sustainable development, environmental enhancement, and urban infrastructure.

Architectural engineering graduates may enter various engineering specialties such as building systems, mechanical, electrical, or acoustic engineering.

Structural engineers play a pivotal role in shaping our physical environment, designing everything from skyscrapers and bridges to educational facilities and transportation hubs.
