This course offers a comprehensive foundation in advanced music studies. With our Department of Music's extensive expertise, you'll explore specialized areas including: Mozart, classical period compositions, Renaissance music
the relationship between music and visual arts, stylistic developments in the 18th-19th centuries, the concerto form
Broadway and Hollywood musical theater.
You'll investigate topics like gender in music, cultural philosophies, creative approaches, performance practices, and audience reception, employing various analytical methods to understand music's creation, distribution, and impact.
During the initial term, all students complete a core module in critical musicology. This establishes fundamental musicological principles and techniques, covering concepts from national identity to musical symbolism. You'll then implement these frameworks when examining specific musical works in the following term.
For most participants, the dissertation represents the pinnacle of their studies. You'll pursue independent research on any musical subject or repertoire.
