Our research aims to address some of the most pressing scientific issues facing society today. All of our work meets international standards (REF 2021, combining 4, 3 and 2 submissions in Chemistry), with 100% of our research impact rated as outstanding or highly significant (REF 2021, combining 4 and 3 submissions in Chemistry). Our team of research-focused academics oversees projects across these key areas:

biomedical, molecular and analytical chemistry - creating innovative compounds and technologies to tackle contemporary and emerging challenges in healthcare, economic growth, and environmental sustainability

advanced materials and interfaces - focusing on surface chemistry, catalysis, computational solid-state chemistry, property analysis, and materials science
soft matter - encompassing macromolecular chemistry, physical organic chemistry, and surface chemistry studies.

Qualification Requirements

To be accepted to study for a PhD, applicants will normally need to have an undergraduate degree of at least an Upper Second-class/2.1 (or equivalent) and/or a master's degree, in a subject related to the proposed PhD topic. In some areas of the University (particularly in the arts, humanities, social sciences and business) applicants are normally only accepted if they have a master's level qualification.
