Our BA in English Literature and Film allows you to examine two closely related media forms - literature and cinema - that have profoundly influenced contemporary culture.

You'll benefit from studying across two collaborative departments: English Literature, and Film, Theatre & Television. The English Literature department was among the UK's first to study North American writers like Margaret Atwood, maintaining this legacy through a curriculum featuring exceptional contemporary English-language works worldwide. The Film, Theatre & Television department established film studies in UK academia and remains at the forefront with our diverse module offerings.

Through English Literature modules, you'll engage with both familiar authors and genres (from Shakespearean drama to modernists like Plath) alongside less conventional topics like children's literature and publishing history. Our faculty includes specialists ranging from medieval poetry scholars to experts in modern American fiction, ensuring you learn from leading authorities. All department members, from junior lecturers to senior professors, teach at every degree level, guaranteeing expert instruction from your very first year.
