Portsmouth's English Literature research hub is the Centre for Studies in Literature, established in 2009. Our faculty specializes in early modern texts, with strong focus areas in 19th-century literary works and culture, as well as British and American literature from the 20th and 21st centuries. PhD candidates can pursue their studies either full-time or part-time, guided by renowned scholars who foster a dynamic research community. Doctoral candidates receive comprehensive support throughout their studies, including opportunities to present at global conferences, publish in academic journals, and establish valuable connections within UK and international scholarly networks.

Qualification Requirements

The entry requirements for a PhD, MPhil or Professional Doctorate include a good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject, or a master's degree in an appropriate subject. Equivalent professional experience and/or qualifications may be considered. All applicants are subject to interview.
If English is not your first language, you'll need English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 6.5 with no component score below 6.0.
