The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is granted for original research, typically conducted over three years, that substantially advances knowledge in a particular field. Students must show they've developed novel insights or solutions to problems within their chosen discipline.
Mechanical engineering research is organized into two primary groups: Autonomous Marine Systems, and Materials and Structures, which also contribute to Coastal, Ocean and Sediment Transport studies.
The Autonomous Marine Systems (AMS) team brings together specialists from diverse fields including artificial intelligence, control systems engineering, sensor data integration, thermodynamics, marine propulsion systems, and renewable energy technologies.
Materials and Structures (MAST) research encompasses civil engineering materials, composite materials, and structural analysis, with particular focus on material fatigue, multi-scale modeling, and finite element analysis of structures.
Composite Engineering specifically examines polymer matrix composites, with expertise in manufacturing techniques, material characterization, marine applications, natural fibers, and adaptive material systems.
Duration: 3-4 years full-time study.
