The MRes/PhD program serves as the standard pathway to a PhD in Economics at Nottingham. This integrated course begins with a one-year Master's in Research before advancing to the PhD phase.
The MRes component offers:
A year of coursework providing essential methodologies, analytical frameworks, and literature reviews to prepare for doctoral-level economics research
Up to four years of supervised research with internationally recognized faculty members
Dual supervision to facilitate steady progress in your research project
Comprehensive support and resources to engage with the academic community and secure competitive career placements
Possible scholarship opportunities
Prospective PhD candidates should typically apply through our MRes/PhD program. Direct entry to the PhD (bypassing the MRes year) may be considered in rare cases, though such applicants usually aren't eligible for institutional scholarships.
Throughout your studies, you might participate in specialized workshops led by visiting scholars. Recent sessions have featured experts like Petr Sedlacek from Oxford and Pontus Rendahl from Cambridge discussing computational macroeconomics, along with Andres Rodriguez-Clare from Berkeley presenting on trade policies, industrial strategies, and welfare economics.
