For more than three decades, Modern Languages at Nottingham has gained global recognition for its exceptional research in intellectual history and critical theory. Our scholarship explores the evolution of ideas across all the languages and cultures we study, spanning from early modernity to postwar and contemporary intellectual movements. We specialize in numerous influential fields that have shaped theoretical discourse from the 1960s onward, including Marxist thought, Russian formalism, poetic and narrative theory, structuralism and poststructuralism, gender and queer studies, psychoanalytic theory, postcolonial studies, and ordinary language philosophy.
