Our PhD/MPhil Microbiology program allows you to conduct a research project that advances knowledge in Microbiology. Microbes have crucial functions in daily life, ranging from nutrient cycling and food production to severe infections in humans and animals. At Manchester, research primarily focuses on two key areas - Molecular Bacteriology and Molecular Mycology. Molecular Bacteriology concentrates on human bacterial pathogens, covering these aspects: how bacterial polysaccharides and glycoconjugates contribute to disease, connections between infections and gut microbiota, structural analysis of surface proteins in pathogenic bacteria and their interactions with the immune system (with implications for vaccine development), how intracellular bacterial pathogens adapt to survive within host cells, innovative strategies to address antibiotic resistance, and the mechanisms pathogens use to manage transition metals during host-pathogen interactions
