Our PhD/MPhil Infectious Diseases program allows you to conduct a research project that advances knowledge in Infectious Diseases. Manchester's infectious disease research stands out for its exceptional range and depth of expertise, with the variety of pathogens studied making it globally distinctive. Our investigations span viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, concentrating on both the biochemical and biological aspects of pathogens and their interactions with hosts, particularly regarding immune responses to infection. These fundamental studies support the creation of new antimicrobial treatments to address resistance and the development of effective vaccines, both key research focuses in Manchester. The parasites we examine include protozoans like malaria and toxoplasma, intestinal nematodes (whipworms, hookworms), tissue-dwelling filarial nematodes, schistosomes, and tapeworms - all capable of causing significant human health issues.
