The three-to-four year full-time (or equivalent part-time) PhD program in Social Anthropology and Visual Media is designed for students who want to integrate visual and/or audio media into their doctoral research. This involves conducting extensive original research, including 12-18 months of ethnographic fieldwork, culminating in a thesis. A key requirement is the creation of visual/audio media as an essential part of your thesis, with the written component limited to 60,000 words—a 25% reduction from the standard PhD length in Social Anthropology. You'll receive dedicated supervision from a primary advisor, supported by at least one additional supervisor. The program structure varies based on prior qualifications: In the first year, you'll complete research training courses. Around 10 months in (or 20 for part-time students), you'll submit a 12,000-15,000 word research proposal, which is then assessed through an oral viva. Following fieldwork, you'll return to the university to draft your dissertation and refine your audiovisual materials under your supervisors' guidance.
