Our PhD program in Religions and Theology, available both full-time and part-time, requires in-depth original research culminating in an 80,000-word thesis that makes a meaningful scholarly contribution. Research areas span: Biblical studies, including contextual analysis (Ancient Near Eastern, Jewish, Graeco-Roman), linguistic methodologies, gender perspectives in scripture, early Christianity with focus on Nag Hammadi texts and magical writings, manuscripts from the John Rylands Library, Rabbinic and medieval Judaism, Jewish philosophy, interfaith relations between Jewish-Christian and Jewish-Christian-Muslim traditions, Islamic philosophy and medical history, Christian theology, philosophical theology, practical theology, environmental theology, technology and theology, modern Christian movements, religious archives in the John Rylands Library, intersections of religion with philosophy, existentialism, legal philosophy, ethics, science, politics, and gender studies. A key advantage of our program is the opportunity for students to collaborate with experts across multiple fields, enabling interdisciplinary projects with dual-specialist supervision. Past examples include doctoral candidates working with advisors combining Biblical studies and Roman social history, theology and musicology, or South Asian Studies and sociology.
